Nov. 10th City Council Meeting on access to Morrow from Crestview Station

Neighbors,

Just returned from the Crestview Station Zoning hearing in front of the Planning Commission. D.R. Horton Homes had requested several changes to the zoning for their part of the Crestview Station development, which abuts Morrow and the RR tracks. The results were not all that we asked for, but partially. The Planning Commission sends their recommendation from tonight's hearing to the city Council, where the final decision is made. So, we need to do better at the City Council meeting Nov 10th.

The Planning Commission recommended keeping a 1000 vehicle trip limit impact on Morrow from CV Station. Yeah!

They recommended gated emergency vehicle access to CV Station from Morrow. This is better than the general vehicular traffic access D.R. Horton requested, but we will be fighting every few years to keep it closed to general traffic. The better solutions are no access from Morrow so it can't be opened at a later date, or emergency access with restrictions that make it forever unsuitable to car traffic. An example of this would be only one gated emergency entrance that is only one lane
wide without space to expand, and is designated as a bike pedestrian path.

I want to thank all the neighbors who came down to City Hall tonight and the ones who couldn't, but sent me emails.

Hope to see you Nov 10th in front of City Council.

Planning Commission Meeting on Crestview Station access onto Morrow - Oct 25th, 6pm

IMPORTANT !

Neighbors,

Tuesday evening the Planning Commission is hearing the request for zoning changes to the Crestview Station tract that abuts Morrow. D.R. Horton homes is asking the that 1000 car per day limit from Crestview Station to Morrow be lifted (this includes cars that would come east on Morrow and then south on Lamar to enter Crestview Station). They are requesting streets be allowed to connect from the development to Morrow.

Please let the City hear your voice. Attend the hearing. Contact the City Council.

And in the October Crestview Newsletter

We're case #13 out of 27. I do not know what time it will be called. Earlier items may be approved by consent and go very quickly or be discussed for an hour. You may want to bring something to read.

The City Council vote will be the afternoon of Nov 10th.

If the zoning change is passed as proposed, there will be direct access to Morrow from Lamar by cutting through Crestview Station and there will be no traffic limits imposed. Neighbors that lived here before left turns were prohibited from Lamar to Morrow know the amount of traffic we used to have. With the increased housing density being built on the perimeter Crestview, the traffic will likely be much worse, if this passes, than before the left turn prohibition. The left turn at the
light would be avoided by cutting through Crestview Station.

D.R.Horton is requesting the access to Morrow to allow additional access for fire and other emergency vehicles. I support the fire and emergency vehicle access. BUT, that does not justify removing traffic restricts nor require a public street. The emergency responder access could be through a bike/pedestrian path of sufficient width for a firetruck, not two way traffic. This would be a win-win-win. Our new neighbors at Crestview Station would have increased access for emergency responders,
we would have safe bike/pedestrian access to the train station without having to get on Lamar, and the current traffic limits on Morrow would remain in effect.

Please attend the Planning Commission hearing and the City Council vote. If you cannot attend, email me your opinions and I will carry them to City Hall.

Burnet Rd. Public Input Meeting, Oct. 18, 6:45pm

As part of the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan (ASMP),the City of Austin Transportation Department is hosting a series of stakeholder meetings, to
gather input for the community’s vision of these two vital corridors. While
this project takes under consideration all of the previous planning done
along the corridors, it is through this process the desires of residents and
businesses will be shared with the various boards and commissions, and
ultimately the Austin City Council, for funding consideration on
the potential 2012 Bond initiative. The development project and priorities
established for these corridors will make them eligible for funding through
revenue bond initiatives, or other sources of monies. ****

Two public meetings were held on September 20 and 22. Now, we are asking you
as a stakeholder, to attend a meeting to give input and share your vision of
how N. Lamar Blvd. (Hwy 183-N. IH-35) and Burnet Rd. (W. Koenig Ln.-N.
Mopac) may better serve those who live, work, play, and go to school along
these corridors. Your input will be added to that received during the public
meetings. In January 2012, we will return to the community with
recommendations, which will also be shared with the various board and
commission, and presented to city council in February 2012, for
possible inclusion
on the 2012 Bond. ****

This meeting is specifically designed to include neighborhoods and schools.
Other stakeholders meetings will be held at different dates and times.****

Brentwood Park Work Day - Nov. 5th

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

Please mark your calendars to join us once again for a fun and productive morning of work in Brentwood Park on Saturday, November 5th starting at 9 am. If you can join us, we'd be thrilled to see you!

It's part of the mission of Friends of Brentwood Park to organize a minimum of two community workday events per year: It's My Park Day in the spring (thanks to Austin Parks Foundation) plus a fall workday, generally on the first weekend in November. Last fall, an impressive group of volunteers gathered to plant 115 new trees in our park. You can see the video of the tree planting created by Rob and Susan Burneson here. It was an historic event that strengthened our connection to the park and the neighborhood, and gave us all such hope for its future. Little did we know at the time what challenges were in store for those poor young trees during the first year in their new home! In honor of the spirit of that event and those plucky little trees, please come out in November for just a couple of hours, and let's give those new trees (and the older ones too) some extra love to ! help them recover from this summer's epic heat and withstand the ongoing drought so they will one day grow big and strong to provide shade for future generations.

Generous sponsors Genuine Joe Coffeehouse will once again provide their invigorating brew to kickstart your energy on arrival, and CraigO's Pizza on Balcones will be providing post-event pizza at noon. Please thank them with your patronage!

We are coordinating with Austin Parks and Recreation Dept, on several volunteer projects including:

-weeding, dillo dirt and mulch around our newly planted trees as well as tending to established trees
-clean up of picnic benches and playground equipment
-rehab of the sandbox (sift existing sand, add fresh sand, etc)
-maintaining the volleyball court that was nicely rehabbed last spring
-maintaining the planting areas around the pool and east side park sign
-plus other volunteer projects still in the planning stages

In addition to our volunteer events, PARD will be aerating the multi-purpose fields to loosen up that severely compacted soil.

Please visit the registration page to sign up.

Preregistering helps immensely with planning for beverages, food and projects. Be sure to indicate how many people in your household/group will be attending. We know you will have a great time working alongside your neighbors on a cool fall morning in our very own neighborhood park. How do we know? We've seen the smiles, heard the laughter and gotten all sorts of glowing feedback from past workday volunteers.

And if it rains? Don't laugh... it could happen! If it does, we will be celebrating for sure! And we'll reschedule to the next Saturday (November 12th).
