Neighborhood Watch starting up in Crestview

Dear Neighboors,

I have volunteered to organize a Neighborhood Watch program for CrestviewNeighborhood Association. I need everyone's help to make our community as safe as possible! I am currently recruiting block captains. Below is some information on the responsibilities and benefits of a block captain. As you will see, the benefits are worth the little time involved! Allendale and Brentwood currently have successful Neighborhood Watch programs and I am hoping that we can model ours after theirs. Please e-mail me at mitchellapril@att.net if you are interested in participating or have any questions. Thank you so much for all of your help with this!

What is a block captain?
Block captains are the eyes and ears for a block of houses, and look for anything out of the ordinary that might need attention. They carry out the Neighborhood Watch Program on each street. They are not vigilantes, and are supposed to notify the police when necessary, not try to act as poilce themselves.

Responsibilities:
1. Create a contact list for your block
2. Hold a block meeting
3. Update residents of your block on any pertinent issues such as a break-in
4. Keep your ears and eyes open and call 911 if you feel an officer is needed
5. Coordinate the annual National Night Out on your street if you choose

Benefits:
It fosters a better communication and closer knit community on your block. The time commitment is very small and the outcome can be extremely helpful. The idea is to watch out for each other and keep communication open, which makes for a better community all around!

Brentwood Park Mini Work Day - Aug. 13, 7-9AM

I know this is short notice but we are doing another mini-workday at Brentwood Park this Saturday, Aug. 13 from 7-9 AM. We are continuing to mulch the older trees that are stressed. We will be working on the trees in the Eastern section of the park. Please bring a wheel barrel, shovel, gloves, water jug, hat/sunscreen. Last mini-work day we had good attendance and were able to spread 6 yards of mulch in 1.5 hrs. Please come out if you are able.

Brentwood Park Planning Workshop - Aug 11, 7pm

Dear Neighbors,

Please join us for the final Brentwood Park Planning Workshop this Thursday from 7 - 8pm at Brentwood Elementary School. *Please arrive a few minutes early, as the school will close at 8pm and we will need to start on time.*

Preliminary Brentwood Park Survey results as of Wednesday, August 3, 2011 have been posted on the Friends of Brentwood Park website (http://sites.google.com/site/brentwoodparkfriends/). The feedback expressed
in the results will be used to guide activities at the planning workshop.

If you missed the opportunity to fill out the survey online, please feel free to email friendsofbrentwoodpark@gmail.com or call 512-222-FOBP (3627) to get a PDF or paper copy of the survey or leave general comments. Questions/comments can also go to Gregory Montes (gregory.montes@ci.austin.tx.us; 512-974-9458), who is the PARD coordinator for the park plan. All responses received before the end of the planning process (anticipated September 15, 2011) will be included in the final survey tabulations, and comments will be included in the planning process as they are received.

As previously announced, the workshop will be used to discuss how proposed infrastructure improvements should be integrated into a long-term plan for the park.

The purpose of the workshop is to create alternative layouts for future park improvements. For example, where would additional playground equipment go? Where should additional flower beds go? Trails?

After workshop participants have created various alternatives for the park, the community will have the opportunity to vote on their preferred layout online and through a final public meeting.

The meeting will be conducted using guidelines from Austin Parks and Recreation and layout options proposed by workshop attendees will be located both on the FOBP website and on the PARD website. Paper copies will also be located in the display case at Crestview Minimart IGA.

While this planning process gives park users the opportunity to think about what they would like for the future of the park, no individual project can go forward without its own approval process. To occur, each project must include a demonstration of neighborhood support (through public meetings, volunteer efforts, and fund raising) and PARD review.

The Brentwood Park master plan is expected to evolve over time with updates made approximately every 5 years to reflect the impact of completed improvements and the changing nature of the community.

Thank you,
Denman Glober and Friends of Brentwood Park
