Brentwood Park Workday - Oct. 3rd

If anyone is interested in participating in the workday we are having at Brentwood Park Pool, please let me know. We could use another volunteer or two or three.

The date is Sunday, Oct. 3rd at the Brentwood Park Pool at 8:30-11:30 a.m. All gardeners welcome! I think we need 5-10 people to come out and dig some stuff in the ground. We welcome all levels of experience. This is a great way to share knowledge and have fun doing what we love. Please bring gloves, water bottle, spade, maybe a shovel and/or a pair of loppers. We are going to be planting and removing 4 or 5 nandina that have returned over the summer. Please let me know if you are coming.

Koenig&Burnet Tree Planting Work Day - Oct. 2

Note - the work day was changed from Sept. 26, to Oct. 2. - Don
-----

Work will begin on the irrigation component of the Lamar MS tree-planting project next Saturday at 10 AM. If you would be willing to help with the dirty work, RSVP me (so we know we've got snacks and drinks covered) and bring a pick axe and shovel. (If you bring a ditch witch, we may need to pin a medal on you). Earlier we had announced the starting time as 1 PM, and you are welcome to come then if it suits you - there'll still be work to do.

So far there are six of us fully committed in the manual labor pool, plus a few maybes. Assuming six, that's 50 ft of ditch per person, about the length of my front yard. Given that we're all out of shape and that the soil will be damp, I figure it's about 2 hours per person, but our landscape architect, Jody Jarrett, who has done a million of these projects, assures me that there's more pain than that. The way to reduce the pain is to get another 10 or 12 neighbors out, so that each person digs about 15-16 ft of trench. That's the way neighborhood projects are supposed to work. :)

This will be a kid-friendly event. If it rains out, the fall-back day is Saturday 10/2 at 10 am. PLEASE RSVP! Thanks all.

After the concert, stay to watch the classic Indiana Jones movie: Raiders of the Lost Ark. The event is free for attendees. Food purchases and donations during the event will help support the McCallum Orchestra's efforts to raise funds for a trip to perform in Washington, D.C.

No consensus was reached on the intersection of Morrow and Lamar during the joint meeting with representatives from Highland and Crestview. The city asked if the parties would be willing to have another meeting and the Highland representatives said no. City staff subsequently met with the representatives separately. The staff would then meet a week ago last Thursday and made a recommendation to the sub-committee who would then take the recommendation to City Council. No known decision yet. Neighbors may be asked to write and call City Council members.

ANC is working to make neighborhood plans more integral to the city’s new comprehensive plan. The city is putting out 4 options for the comprehensive plan to receive public input from community forums currently taking place (see pamphlet in the latest utility bill). Imagine Austin feedback meeting - Oct. 5th

For the first time in a generation, Austin residents can plot the future of Austin... a future where Austin could have twice as many people living here in thirty years.

The Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan is the city's blueprint for the future - a plan that covers how we'll use land, how we'll get around, where we'll live, where we'll use our free time, and other elements that define the quality of life in our great city. The City of Austin is developing a plan now for the next 30 years.

Based on community input so far, the City has developed four different scenarios for how Austin could look in the future.

During September and October, come to a community forum in your area to review the scenarios and provide your thoughts. You can also review and provide comments online. For more details on the process, and how to get involved, visit www.ImagineAustin.net, call 3-1-1, or visit your local branch library, and ask about the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan.

This is a great time to contribute, Austin! Help plan Austin's future...the future is what we make it!

Save the date for the third round of public input in Imagine Austin:

Tuesday, October 5, 5 - 8pm, Dell Jewish Community Center

North Austin Coalition of Neighborhoods - Neighborhood Watch Training

Neighborhood Watch 101 training, Wednesday at 7:30 Capital Lodge #23, 6809 Guadalupe (one block north of Airport Blvd).

NACN has become official partners with Citizen Led Austin Safety Partnership. C.L.A.S.P. is focused on two things - training and equiping Neighborhood Watches and helping neighborhoods, law enforcement, and the judicial system work together to create effective community policing. If you want to start a Watch, or are not quite sure if your Watch is effective, this would be a great meeting to attend. Please note that a Watch does not have to be an entire street - if you are interested in just organizing 5 or 10 houses around you, that is still a Watch!

NACN's meeting will start at 7 pm, the Neighborhood Watch training will start at 7:30 pm - hope to see you there!

Feedback on the Friends of Brentwood Park tree planting proposal

Last month, Friends of Brentwood Park, held an open house at Brentwood Park to show neighbors the tree planting plan and get feedback. We took that feedback back to Austin Parks and Recreation and made some decisions. To see the list of questions and answers, please go to the Friends of Brentwood Park website at http://sites.google.com/site/brentwoodparkfriends/ . Look under community feedback to see the Q and A's. Also, you can take a look at the final map.
