Call for Volunteers - Tree Planting Along St. Joseph

The City of Austin Parks and Recreation Dept. will be planting approximately 100+ trees along the medians of St. Joseph (aka Morrow) and Northcross Drive this fall.

Allandale is gathering volunteers for planting along Northcross Drive, and Crestview needs to help plant along St. Joseph. Emily King, City of Austin Forester, is leading the project.

We have no specific details yet, except to say this is a one-day event, and
will happen later this fall. Kat Correa has been asked by Jonathan Locklin, CNA President, to coordinate the effort. She will send updates as we get more details, and will confirm date, time and meeting location. The city should supply all planting materials, but if we need to bring anything at all, it should be minimal (maybe a shovel?).

All we need is 30 neighborhood volunteers to commit to helping plant trees for 3 to 4 hours on the big day. Won't it be gratifying to know that your efforts will live on for decades??

Schedules are busy, and fall has several holidays, but even if you're a little interested and can only commit to a "maybe" right now, please let Kat know. Once we confirm the date/time, we'll re-confirm all volunteers and see who is available that day.

To be clear, the city will not pursue this project without neighborhood support. The city will commit to watering the trees for the first two years, but they absolutely need our help in planting the trees.

Please reply to Kat with your name/email/phone info and she'll keep track of our volunteers.

THANK YOU!!

08.11.08 CNA General Meeting

Elaine Dill presented information on the Neighborhood Habitat Challenge and how to turn your yard into a wildlife habitat. There is a contest wherein the top three neighborhoods with the most newly certified habitats by Oct. 31, 2008 will be recognized by the city and awarded prizes. The city needs 700 new certified homes to be the first certified habitat city.

Visit the Wildlife Austin Program, or contact Elaine at edill@grandecom.net for more information.

Elaine hopes to have a tour of 6-8 certified houses in the neighborhood in September.
