County to Sell Farmer's Market
Travis County is selling the property they own on Burnet Road south of Justin Lane. The property consists of 2.3 acres and currently houses the Farmer’s Market. On March 21st, Precinct 2 County Commissioner Sarah Echardt hosted a public hearing at the Brentwood School. The purpose was for area residents to hear redevelopment concepts by the three potential buyers who are in the running to purchase the property.
Each prospective purchaser assured neighbors that their effort would fall within the guidelines established by the 2004 Brentwood/Highland Neighborhood Plan. The plan allows for mixed-use development at the site. Those attending were provided a five-item questionnaire and were asked to rate from 1 to 5 how each potential buyer addressed each question. Commissioner Echardt stated that the input would be taken into consideration when the Commissioners Court makes their decision. When asked, she did share that the eventual purchaser could not be held to the redevelopment concept presented at the hearing. The redevelopment plan will have to go through the City of Austin review process and that would include citizen input. One thing for sure, change is coming to this piece of Burnet Road.
The County is looking to finalize the sale by late this summer during budget deliberations. Due to current lease agreements, redevelopment would begin no sooner than mid 2008.
